Gluteal muscle size and quality in professional ballet dancers compared to non-dancing athletes

چکیده
Background: Professional ballet dancers load their hips in extreme ranges of motion and commonly report hip pain. Evaluating gluteal muscle size quality may help guide exercise programs. Objectives this study were to compare (fatty infiltration) compared athletes; investigate the relationship between quality, reports hip-related Methods: In case-control study, professional (current retired, n=49, mean age 35 years, range 19-63) sex-matched non-dancing athletes n=49) underwent magnetic resonance imaging both hips. Athletes played tennis, basketball or netball. Muscle cross-sectional areas (CSA) obtained at standardised landmarks for gluteus maximus (GMax) medius (GMed). Full volume was calculated minimus (GMin). Fatty infiltration rated all muscles (including anterior posterior segments GMed GMin) using Goutallier classification system. groups linear mixed models. a model binary logistic regression. Hip-related pain (subjective yes/no time data collection), participation status, limb side sex included as covariates. Results: Ballet had significantly larger GMax (upper p<0.01, middle lower p=0.01) (level inferior iliac spine greater sciatic foramen p<0.01) CSA GMin (p<0.01), when normalised weight (Kg). There no difference fatty ratings athletes. subjective Retired reporting more likely have (p=0.04) than those without Discussion/Conclusion: Gluteal are might specifically be due externally rotated position unique ballet. Dancers comparable quality. related but not size. Impact/Application field:•Professional area, with (in kilograms).•Professional Conflict interest: None declared.

Characteristics and prevalence of musculoskeletal injury in professional and non-professional ballet dancers
BACKGROUND Ballet is a high-performance activity that requires an advanced level of technical skills. Ballet places great stress on tendons, muscles, bones, and joints and may act directly as a trigger of injury by overuse. OBJECTIVES 1) to describe the main types of injuries and affected areas related to classical ballet and 2) to compare the frequency of musculoskeletal injuries among profe...
متن کاملPain and pain tolerance in professional ballet dancers.
Pain experience in sport had been the subject of increasing research in recent years. While sports professionals have generally been found to have higher pain thresholds than control subjects the reasons for this are not entirely clear. The present study seeks to investigate one possible explanatory factor, the importance of the popular image of the physical activity and of the self-image of it...
متن کاملAttentional Focus in Classical Ballet: A Survey Of Professional Dancers.
Focus of attention and its effects on skilled motor performance has become an important line of research in the motor learning domain. Numerous studies have demonstrated that an external focus of attention (i.e., on the movement effect) enhances motor performance and learning relative to an internal focus (i.e., on body movements). Thus, small differences in the wording of instructions or feedb...
متن کاملVitamin D status in professional ballet dancers: winter vs. summer.
OBJECTIVE Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is produced by the exposure of the skin to sunlight. Therefore athletes who train indoors, such as dancers, are vulnerable to vitamin D deficiency. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D status in UK professional dancers during periods of reduced and increased sunlight exposure (i.e., winter vs. summer), and to assess the impac...
متن کاملMulti-segmental postural coordination in professional ballet dancers.
Ballet dancers have heightened balance skills, but previous studies that compared dancers to non-dancers have not quantified patterns of multi-joint postural coordination. This study utilized a visual tracking task that required professional ballet dancers and untrained control participants to sway with the fore-aft motion of a target while standing on one leg, at target frequencies of 0.2 and ...
